Timeslips 2018

It’s July and it’s time for a new version of Timeslips. Timeslips 2018 is scheduled for release on Tuesday, July 18, 2017.

We are often asked “Should I update?”. The answer is usually “it depends”. Factors like what version are you currently running, and what is your operating environment are as important as looking at the new features. While you may have heard rumors that Timeslips is going to a subscription model, this is not true. As Timeslips certified consultants, we can sell you a perpetual license version, with or without a support plan, or a subscription version. The choice is yours and we can help you choose.

This year there is an additional factor. Sage has announced that they will only be supporting the current version and one version back. Therefore, as of August, only Timeslips 2018, 2017 and Premium (subscription version) will be supported. If you are running E-Center or accepting credit cards through Sage Timeslips, you will need to be on a supported version. Upgrading while on a supported version is also less expensive. If you are on an older version of Timeslips and running Windows 10 or Office 2016, or planning to, it may be time to upgrade. Similarly, for larger firms that have not yet upgraded, the additional capacities and performance benefits of the newer versions mean that it may be a good time to upgrade.

Timeslips 2018 also offers some new features.

  • Quick Bills allow you to build a bill all in one screen. When you are billing a one time client, or just trying to get one bill out, this feature can speed up the process.
  • Fee Allocation expanded. Previously Timeslips was limited to three categories for fee allocation reporting. With Timeslips 2018, this has been expanded to 10 categories, adding more power and flexibility in reporting.
  • Set the start day of the work week. This setting affects reports that total amounts by week and lets you set a work week that matches how your firm measures a week.
  • Timeslips shows hints in name lists when My Lists are active. While a small thing, this will probably save many calls to consultants. Have you ever looked at the client list and known that people were missing but can’t determine why? When my list is active, your lists are filtered based on your assigned names. This was sometimes activated by mistake or activated and forgotten leading to frustration in finding those missing names. Now a simple reminder will help you know to change to all, and “find” those missing names.
  • Option to show contact email addresses on pre-bill worksheets
  • New bill layout options to control page break before consolidated bill summary
  • Improved performance
    • If your database includes a lot of consolidated bills, opening the Reprint Bills list (select Bills > Reprint
Bills ) could be slow. You can now unmark the ‘Show consolidated projects separately’ option to
      improve performance.
    • You can use the Split Billing Rules dialog box (select Bills > Split Billing Rules ) to maintain split
billing. If you have a lot of rules, this list could open slowly.
    • When working with timesheets, the list of timesheet templates (select Slips > Time Sheet > Slip
      Templates ) loads much faster.
    • Fee Allocations report and Fee Allocation by Period report have been optimized to generate much
    • Timekeeper Collections report and Timekeeper Collections by Period report have been optimized to
      generate much faster.
  • eCenter Data Transfer Utility is now part of Timeslips, making it easier to use.
  • View all reports on one list and “search for report” field. This can be especially useful if reports have been moved from default locations

Many of these features were previously added to Timeslips Premium, so they have already been tested. If you would like to review the system requirements, please go to Timeslips system requirements

Timeslips changes support policy – Important information for E-Center users

Timeslips has announced that effective August 1, 2017 they are changing their support policy. Previously, Sage provided support on the current version and two versions back. Effective August 1, 2017, they will only be supporting the current version and one back.
What does this mean to you? If you are using E-Center it means you will have to upgrade at least every other year as once a product goes off support it will no longer work with E-center. It also means that if you want to get support from Sage you have to upgrade every other year. Consultants, such as myself, will generally provide support regardless of version.
Your options are:
– Purchase an upgrade every other year at current prices
– Switch to Timeslips Premium. This is a subscription which includes support and all updates. However, if you choose to discontinue your subscription your database will become read-only. You can switch to a perpetual version at the current price.
– Purchase Sage Business Care. This option will provide updates to Sage Timeslips perpetual license version and give you support (the amount depends on the level purchased).
Unsure what to do? Please contact us and we can help you understand your options.

Timeslips 2015 Obsolesence

Sage has announced that Timeslips 2015 will become obsolete effective July 31, 2017. This is in keeping with past policies but is important to note, especially if you are running Timeslips ecenter.

The policy is stated as “If you are using an obsolete version of Sage Timeslips, you are required to upgrade to the current version to receive customer support and to ensure compliance with new operating environments.”

While we will always provide support to the best of our ability, regardless of version, there are some things we can’t do. If you are using Sage Timeslips eCenter or Sage Timeslips Electronic Bill Delivery these functions will not work after July 31, 2017 unless you are running Sage Timeslips 2016, 2017 or Premium.

If you have questions, or would like pricing on upgrading, please contact us.

Getting Support

Sage has announced that, effective March 31, 2017, you will no longer be able to purchase on demand support. This is part of a trend we are seeing with many products.

If you are using Timeslips you then have three options

  1. Purchase Sage Business Care plan
  2. Subscribe to Timeslips premium
  3. Work with an independent consultant

Regardless of what programs you are using and the policies of the company, option 3 is always available.

There are definite advantages to working with a certified consultant. You can get support when you need it, without paying for what you don’t need. However, if you prefer a fixed fee, that can be arranged.

As a consultant, I can login directly to your computer, with your permission of course, and help to resolve your issue. This saves time as you don’t have to try to describe what is on the scree, I can see it.  Another benefit of working with a certified consultant is that we often know multiple programs. So if you have a problem that goes across programs, we can help. You are also working with someone consistently so they know your system. Of course, there is a trade-off when the consultant is not available. That’s why I have business partners who can help. Yes, they won’t have worked with you before but you still have a single primary contact, as well as the ability to get help when you need it.

Because we deal with multiple clients we often can see things in new or creative ways and can offer solutions to help you work more effectively. If we see an area where you might benefit from training we may point this out. This isn’t to sell you, but to help you.

Additionally, while we recommend staying on supported versions, we have the ability to help with older versions of software that may not be supported by the company. There are many reasons why firms don’t upgrade but you still may need help.

No matter what the policies of Sage and other vendors, working with a certified consultant is always an option for support and training. Contact us to see how we can help you.

Timeslips and Windows 10 Anniversary Update

Did Windows update your computer and now Timeslips won’t run? No need to panic, we have a simple fix.
The problem is that Windows has “removed” the default printer and Timeslips needs this.
To fix the problem, go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers. Pick a printer and right click. Choose make this the default printer. You will have to confirm. Once done, go back to Timeslips and it should now run correctly.

Timeslips leaves BDE behind

Timeslips has long been limited in capacity and performance by the Borland Database Engine on which it was dependent. A few years ago Sage addressed this by releasing a Firebird SQL version of Timeslips (Timeslips Premium) that removed the capacity restrictions and greatly improved performance in a network environment. However, many larger firms who would have benefited from this new version were reluctant to change since Timeslips Premium is a subscription offering. While this means it includes support and upgrades, it all means that if you stop paying the database becomes read only.

Timeslips BDE version continued to be offered for those that preferred a perpetual license. But the limitations remained and few new features were added.

Sage has now announced that there will not be a 2017 BDE version. Instead, effective with the 2017 release, there will be two Firebird SQL versions, a subscription version and a perpetual license version. The subscription version will continue to include support, upgrades and new features. The perpetual license version will have support available at an additional price and new features will be added when a new version is released each year. If you are on the perpetual license version and want the new features, you will purchase an upgrade. There may be some features that are available in the Premium version that are not in the perpetual license version.

Some feature s that are currently in Timeslips Premium that are expected to be included in Timeslips 2017 include redesigned budgeting and Accounts Receivable and Client Address Ghost Labels. The Quick Bill and Calculated field on invoices capabilities are planned to be only available in Timeslips Premium at this time.

Timeslips 2017 perpetual license version based on Firebird SQL is expected to be available in the June/July 2016 time frame. Timeslips BDE databases will automatically be converted to Firebird SQL on installation so that no data is lost. Pricing is not yet available.
